The Met Gala also formerly known as the Costume Institute Gala is fashion’s night out. Each year the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute features the work of celebrated tenured designers, cultures and even icons. Past years have celebrated McQueen, China, Jackie O amongst others. This year’s met gala was centered around the Rei Kawakubo, the designer and founder of Comme des Garçons and Dover Street Market. Rei Kawakubo founded Comme des Garçons in 1973. The iconic Japanese label focuses on structure rather than sexiness. Her pieces are truly wearable art.
This year several desi stars walked the carpet including Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Riz Ahmed, Aziz Ansari, Mindy Kaling, and Hasan Minhaj.
Priyanka Chopra really took costume gala literally wearing this custom couture Ralph Lauren trench. We love how simplistically elegant this is. Plus the resulting media flutter was hysterical. We love how she totally owns it though. Its the Met Gala, it’s supposed to be dramatic y’all!
This was Deepika Padukone’s first Met Ball. The award-winning Bollywood actress decided to wear a beautiful minimalistic Tommy Hilfiger white slip gown.
We loved Deepika’s accessories and her selfie with well-known celebrity hair stylist and fellow desi, Harry Josh.
Our thoughts on the look? Yea we love that Deepika was there, and yes we loved the gown but not for the Met Gala. It’s too easy. The Met Gala is the one night for drama and creativity. This number falls quite short of that. Maybe next year Deeps will just wow us. She usually does!
Our favorite funny desi girl, Mindy Kaling, decided to wear honorary desi designer, Prabal Gurung, to the Met Ball. We absolutely love this color on Mindy, but again wish there was more drama. She does get extra points for that fun fringe.
Also her makeup is so dewy and youthful! Love!
On to the most dapper gents of the night. We absolutely love love love Hasaan Minhaj in this tailored navy shawl collar tuxedo by Turnbull & Asser, a London based gentlemen’s bespoke clothier. Also loving the velvet bow tie. Ok so we basically think this look is perfection from head to toe, including the beard!
Aziz Ansari definitely impressed us with his navy Ermenegildo Zegna Couture double-breasted tux and the added broach. Usually we are not a fan of guys an extra jewelry, but somehow this makes sense. We also love the minimalistic buttons on this tux!
Lastly, Riz Ahmed. Many know him from Star Wars: Rogue One and the HBO mini series, The Night Of (which is phenomenal btw), but did you know hes also a rapper. True story. His hip-hop group, Swet Shop Boys, performed at Coachella this year. Yeah. Check them out here:
Riz looked quite dapper in this textured Dior Homme number. Black on black on black.
Overall, we love how each look is quite different from the others. But this year, we have to give the Met Gala to the guys. For a group with very limited options, they definitely stole the show, or rather red carpet. Better luck next year ladies!
