Canada is a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II at it’s head, however its parliament is comprised of a multi-party system. The three primary parties are the Liberal Party of Canada, the Conservative Party of Canada and the New Democratic Party.
Jagmeet Singh, a Sikh Punjabi, has just been elected as the leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party, the third largest political party. In a series of firsts, Jagmeet is most notably Canada’s first non-white head of a major party. He is a former trial attorney, who is hoping to run against Justin Tradeau, Canada’s current prime minister during the next election in October of 2019.
As the leader of the progressive democratic party, Jagmeet supports raising minimum wage to $15/hour, LBGTQ rights, providing subsidies to environmentally conscious companies, and the decriminalization of all personal possession of drugs by treating drug abuse as a medical condition.
Just prior to being elected as the leader of the New Democratic Party, Jagmeet made headlines for his non-reactionary response to a female heckler at an event. His even-temperedness and poise while being attacked was remarkable.
Although it is hard to hear what the woman says, she states, “We know you are in bed with sharia. We know you are in bed with the Muslim brotherhood.” Not once while being verbally attacked, did Jagmeet note this religion. Instead he noted that “hate is wrong”. He continues to actively encourage promoting respect and open-mindedness to all religions.
“I’ve been stopped by the police multiple times for no other reason than the color of my skin. It makes you feel like you don’t belong. Like there’s something wrong with you for just being you.”
“And that’s why, as prime minister, I will make sure that no one in Canada is stopped by the police because of the way they look or the color of their skin.”
Jagmeet’s words seem quite salient in today’s world.
